HMF Racing Full System Exhaust Instructions

For Models: Sportsman® 1000 (2015-2022)

Removal

Do not work on any machine with a hot engine or exhaust, allow time for all parts to cool in order to reduce the risk of burns. 

Before working on your machine make sure it is parked on a level surface with the transmission in park and/or the parking brake engaged. 

Remove the following:

    -Seat

    -Right side covers

    - 2 springs at head pipe to muffler joint

    - Original muffler

    - Original head pipe  Note: Save the head pipe nuts and lock washers. These are reused with your HMF head pipe.

TIP: For better access to the head pipe nuts the shift rod can be detached from the arm on the transmission and moved out of the way.  

    - Top muffler hanger

Be sure that the  original gaskets stay in the exhaust ports of the cylinder head.  These will be reused with your HMF head pipe.

Installation

1. Temporarily install the HMF head pipe without the hardware and mark the position on the belt cover where the head pipe passes by.  

2. Remove the head pipe and install (2) of the supplied self adhesive heat shield squares as marked in the previous step. 

NOTE: In your parts bag (3) sheets of self adhesive heat sheild material are provided.  If needed, the third sheet may be applied to the fender opposite of the belt cover.  (See Figure #1)

3. Install the HMF head pipe using the original nuts and lock washers.  DO NOT TIGHTEN YET.

TIP: To access the inside nut on the rear head pipe easier use a 1/4" drive socket with a swivel joint and a long extension as shown below.(See Figure #2)

4. Install the HMF Mid Pipe so that it slides over the HMF head pipe.

5. Using the (3) supplied 3/8"x1" hex bolts, (3) 3/8" washers, and (3) 3/8" nyloc nuts, install the HMF muffler bracket as shown.(See Figure #3)

6. Using the (2) supplied M8x40 hex bolts, (4) 5/16" washers, (2) 1/4" washers, and (2) M8 nyloc nuts, install the HMF muffler to the HMF bracket being sure that the inlet of the muffler slides all the way over the end of the mid pipe.  Be sure to place a 5/16" fender washer on each side of the rubber mounts on the muffler hangers.  DO NOT TIGHTEN YET.(See Figure #4)

7. Torqe the head pipe nuts to factory specs.

8. Use a spring puller or long piece of electrical wire to install (2) of the supplied springs at the head pipe to mid pipe joint.

9. Install the 3rd spring at the mid pipe to muffler joint.

10. Be sure that the muffler is level, then tighten the muffler mounting bolts.

11. Inspect all areas around the exhaust system for proper clearance and alignment.  Adjust as necessary.  HMF will not be held responsible for damage caused by improper installation.
