View Full Version : Running Lean?

I just installed an HMF Optimizer on my 09 Renegade 800; the install went fine, the bike started right up, the red #8 and green #1 were flashing back and forth with the key on, once started they would stream back and forth 3 times and then the #1 green would stay lit.
Took it out for a ride and it did feel a bit faster, but not quite what I had expected. However once I was riding it hard for a bit (75 degree weather) it read "HI TEMP" on the digital display. It has never done this before, only after I put on the Opti.
I called HMF and talked to a girl who couldn't really give me any help other than ask where I put the ground, I told her it is not grounded to the battery but to a frame ground. We then went through the settings and verified they are setup correctly. She then basically said I have to send it back so they could look at it.
The bike has a HMF Utility Pipe and will have a K&N filter as well, I amglad I didn't put that filter on or it would have been super lean.
So is there anything I can do to richen up the map myself or should I just send it in like advised? I really don't want to have to ship it back and wait weeks to get it back but if I have to I will I guess.

I think you are probably on the right track thinking that it is lean causing your higher than normal temp. You'll need to determine which mode is lean. With the engine warm and idling, set the first(green) mode to the highest smooth RPM. Then you'll need to do a full throttle plug check to determine if you are getting enough fuel at WOT. WOT fuel delivery is handled by mode 3(red). The higher the number, the richer the mixture. Mode 2 is like an accelerator pump in a carb. It will engage when you stab the throttle. I don't think your problem is here because that is not a mode that is in constant use. Focus on one and three. Your lights on the Optimizer are doing what they should so I don't believe you have an issue with the box. Just a little fine tuning in order.

Yeah but HMF told me to send it back and told me not to mess with it, I asked if I could richen it up under their instruction and the girl said no they can't do that. I would just try it before I sent it back though, I am sure it only needs a slight bump up and it would be fine.
Could you give me some in detail instructions on how to richen it up?

With the engine warm and idling, set the first(green) mode to the highest smooth RPM. Press the mode button once. The green light will begin to flash at whichever number it is currently set to. Move this light using the + or - button and listen for the highest smooth RPM. Once you find it, wait for the solid green #1 to re appear. For WOT (red mode) determine whether you need to go richer or leaner by doing a plug check outlined here http://hmfracing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32
Once you have determined this (I think you are lean) with the engine warm and idling, press the mode button 3 times. The red light will begin to flash at the number it is currently set to. Use the + or - button to add or remove fuel and then do another plug check. Before you know it you will be an engine SUPER TUNER

Alright I will try that out today, should I just adjust it up by 1 degree and then test it out? Because I am going to install a K&N filter on it that wasn't on it before, and if it was lean before now it will really need more fuel.
Or should I adjust the WOT 2 degrees and then check the plugs?
Also since I am writing it would be nice to know why this thing didn't come setup according to my mods, that was their claim to fame so to speak. Totally plug and play, pre-setup for your pipe, filter, ect. I throw this thing on just with the pipe and it runs lean as hell, doesn't make sense to me.
Is each bike different? Different air flow? Different injector pulse? Different fuel pressure?
Thanks for all your help so far.

If you are going to run the K&N install it before you start tuning. Stick with increments of 1. Small changes are key.
It would be impossible for us to have each optimizer dialed perfectly for everyone. All we can do is install the map and settings that worked best for us here on that particular machine. These should be pretty close but every machine is a bit different than the next. Once you start modifying any engine whos ECM doesn't have the capability of detecting changing conditions and modifications, tuning becomes a normal part of the game. Most of the FI atvs out there today cannot detect changes in airflow volume. That's why they need aftermarket fuel controllers such as the Optimizer.

Richened it up one notch after installing the K&N, seems to be running a bit better, haven't had time to really get on it much to see if it is running hot. However, after adding some fuel it seemed to have a bit more power.
We'll see if it runs at normal temp the next time I am out riding it hard.
Thanks for your help.
