I'm trying to fine-tune my machine with the hmf optimizer. I've got the penland utility series slip on. I drive my machine here in Canada (cooler temps) at elevations of 2000 - 3000 ft. My machine was manufactured 11/06, but has the new BUDDS update from the dealer. I currently run settings of 2,2,3.5 and havn't had any obvious problems. I am, however, getting a bit of a backfire with engine breaking. Should I be using different settings?

Backfire as in "gunshot bang" or popping? Some popping on decel or engine braking is very normal. Most machines actually do it from the factory, but you cant hear it due to the quiet exhaust. Put a set of fresh plugs in it and do a plug check.

The backfire was just a small popping sound which didnt sound too bad. I changed the settings a bit (1.5, 3, 3) and it seems to have solved the backfire. I will do a plug check soon. Is a plug check the only way to tell if the settings are working other than doing timed runs? Do these current settings sound normal for my elevation, or do you think it may be a little lean on the 0-1/4 throttle? Thanks for the help.

Considering your elevation, those settings sound about right. Plug check is the best way to confirm A/F raito. Other than dyno/5 gas tuning.
