About Quad Racing in South Africa.
All racing in South Africa is controlled by Motorsport South Africa (motorsport.co.za). We have regional quad racing, usually divided into the provinces in the country, and we have a national quad series. There is also some flat track racing but this is limited to the availibility of tracks.

In the regional races we compete in two classess; An open class - quads bigger than 400cc or quads with modifications such as 440kits. The smaller quads up to 400cc with limited modifications, jetting, pipes, compete in a separate class. At national level we only have an open class.

Regionally the amount of races differ, I compete in the Northern and North West compionships on a TRX 400 EX and ended second in the campioship in my first year of racing. We have between 7 - 9 races per year. Nationally we have 8 races this year.

Quads dominating the racing scene are Bombardier, Yamaha YFZ,Raptor, LTZ 400. TRX400EX, some Kawasaki V700, Predators. We do not have any full factory teams but importers and dealerships do support some of the strong teams. There are between 45 to 60 quad racers in a race and at regional level the race distances are up to 250 km per race and at national level up to 500 km per race with one race that is a 1000 km long over two days in semi desert conditions.

Quads sales in South Africa currently make up about 45% - 49% off all bike sales in the country(and growing), and yamaha is leading the quad sales.

Off road racing, this include quad racing, is growing by the day and as some of you are aware we currently have in our mids the quad racer that has won the 2004 Paris/Dakar rally on a Bombardier. A very humble and down to earth person, Cornel de Villiers. His victory has inspired more quad racers to start thinking about tackling this race and other international races in the future.

If you are intresting in any more info from this part of the world, please let me know and I will keep you informed. We are waiting for the release of the new Honda TRX450R, I have ordered one.
