View Full Version : Exhaust Leaking

Well I wondered why the very corner of my head was turning brown. Come to find I have a small exhaust leak.

The part of the clamp that comes together was at the back of the pipe and I couldnt see that the clamp was not meshing together like it should. The strap looking piece of metal that looks like it would slide along the pipe as it tightens bound up and made and outward bulge in the clamp and in turn made the same bulge in the mid pipe where it connects to the stock header pipe. We thought maybe we could turn the clamp and things would straighten out, now there are 2 bulges in the mid pipe and still leaking.

Now that I have spent the money to order a new mid pipe and another clamp, here's my question.

Is there some particular way you need to have this clamp installed to prevent the binding on the inside of the clamp as it tightens. I have pics of the clamp and the pipe if that would better show what happened. I'd rather not have to buy the parts again. Do the splits need to be turned a certain way in accordance with the clamp or what?

Well I started another thread to show the pics that show where the clamp is dimpling the pipe when you tighten it. Now the post is gone, I tried Friday and Saturday to get a hold of someone to find out why my pipe continually leaks and cant get a return call it seems. Come on folks where's this great customer service I hear about. When the silencer bracket broke on my Toomeys I called them and they sent me a whole new silencer and stinger tube at no charge and no hassle. Ive tried several different things to make this pipe quit leaking and Im at my wits end. On top of that I have talked to several people some being at YFZ Central and they seem to have leaky slip ons too. I love the pipe but hate the leaking. Can someone help or return the messages ive left for help.

The outside diameter of the stock headpipe is in milimeters.
Our inside diameter is in standard inches. The slip fit between the two surfaces will be a tad off. Aside from using a sealant (which I personally use on a drag bike) and cranking down on the t bolt clamp, there may not be a sure fire way of completely sealing off the mating surface.
The inlet does have slots in it..adding more area for the inlet to close will help. Using a saw cut some slots in between the slots already there, the same depth. This will allow the material to shrink tighter onto the headpipe.
Sounds like a bunch of crap to go through..but some fit tighter than others.
Sorry, this is the best info I can give you...we have sold quite a few of the YFZ slip ons and not many have had this problem.
Hope this helps.

Well we tried cutting the extra slots in the first mid pipe that came with the slip on. This did not help. Like I said when we spoke on the phone we tightened the clamp so much it messed the clamp up and couldnt get it off except to cut the poly lock nut off. I even wasted the money buying another mid pipe thinking maybe I got a bunk pipe, and it technically fits worse than the first one. So am I just screwed on this deal or what? Someone has to have a solution for this. I'm out $300 so far and I have a cool looking pipe that makes a cool ticking and spitting sound all the time. Come on pipe guru's work with a sista!
